Soft swap
In partner swapping, exchanging partners for kissing, touch, or oral play only — penetrative sex stays within the original couple.
Updated July 3, 2026
Soft swap is a term from the swinging world: two couples (or more) exchange partners, but only up to an agreed level — typically kissing, manual touch, or oral play. Penetrative sex remains exclusive to the original partners. The counterpart is a full swap, where that boundary is opened too.
Why couples choose soft swap
- A gradual first step. It lets couples explore non-monogamy while keeping their most significant boundary intact.
- Clearer emotional footing. Many couples find the explicit limit reduces jealousy while they learn how they each react.
- It can be the destination, not a phase. Plenty of couples stay soft-swap permanently because it fits them.
Making it work
The label is shorthand, not a contract — every pair must define what “soft” includes for them, ideally before the evening starts. Agree on check-in signals, what happens if someone feels uncomfortable, and how you will debrief afterwards. Renegotiating in the middle of a scene, under social pressure, is how boundaries get blurred.
