Mira typed the sentence three times before breakfast and erased it three times before the kettle clicked off.

It was not a dramatic sentence. That made it worse.

I need to talk about last night.

The words sat on the screen with the calm of a form. Too clean, too official, too small for the heat in her throat.

Lin had left early. He always folded the blanket on the back of the sofa before he left, even when they were late, even when there had been tension. That neat rectangle of fabric made Mira angry for no fair reason. It looked like proof that he could put the room back together faster than she could put herself back together.

She set the phone face down.

The kettle clicked again as it cooled. Outside, a delivery bike passed under the window, bell bright against the wet street.

Mira made tea and did not drink it.

When Lin finally wrote, his message was short.

Home. I keep thinking about the part where you went quiet. I should have stopped sooner. Can we talk when you want to?

Mira read it once. Then again.

There was no defense in it. No demand for reassurance. No question shaped like a trap.

She noticed her shoulders lowering before she decided to forgive him for anything.

That was the first thing she wrote in the notebook she had bought months ago and never used:

Sometimes care sounds like not asking for an answer immediately.

She left the message unsent for another hour. Then she wrote back.

Tonight. Not by text.
